GOODS & SERVICES TAX (GST)

Goods & Services Tax was brought to effect from 1 st July 2017 in complete replacement of all Indirect Taxes, under certain exemptions, for a unified indirect tax structure. In erstwhile tax regime, sale of goods were taxed by State & Central Governments and the services rendered, under certain exemptions, were taxed by Central Government.

As a new law, GST Act poses certain new areas of tax applicability and new methods of tax computation. GST Act provides for tax exemption under the term "Threshold Volume" up to certain level of supplies and services and under the term "Composition Tax" up to certain levels and under certain conditions. It may look a little cumbersome to understand, comply with, compute and remit tax component at present under GST Act since it is new and comprehensive.

It, therefore, needs a business person to take advice from experts in GST implementation to avoid any involuntary circumvention of law compliance and get entangled under the penal provisions of the law, unaware.
